Firearms magazine ‘truly sorry’ for saying ‘pocket sized machine gun’ not for civilians

The editor of a firearms magazine is backing down after saying that civilians should not be allowed to purchase the MP7A1 — a concealable submachine gun that was specifically designed to penetrate body armor — because the weapon had no “sporting applications.”
“[T]he MP71A [sic] is unavailable to civilians and for good measure,” Editor Jerry Tsai wrote in the latest issue of Recoil magazine. “We all know that’s technology no civvies should ever get to lay their hands on. This is a purpose-built weapon with no sporting applications to speak of.”
Heckler & Koch began manufacturing the MP7 series of personal defense weapons in 2001 after high-quality body armor rendered earlier submachine guns ineffective. Gunslot describes the MP7A1 as a “scaled down assault rifle”... But many gun enthusiasts took Tsai’s remarks as an attack on the Second Amendment and mounted a social media campaign to pressure advertisers to stop doing businesses with the magazine...Other manufacturers like Silencerco, Magpul, Haley Strategic Partners, Imminent Tactical Solutions, Panteao Productions and Surefire also pledged not to advertise in Recoil...“We were furious when we read Jerry’s statements”...

The "Kinder & Gentler" communistic South African government which instigated "Gun Control" are now expressing concern that criminals are able to obtain firearms, especially from their own police/security organs (shades of Mexico), which proves what pro-gun people have been saying for years but have been vilified for. "Duh"?...When gun laws were previously "pro-freedom", the crime rate was much lower and the regular citizen could defend themselves. Now, the opposite reigns.  We keep proving this and they keep denying it, meanwhile, the dead bodies of victims keep piling up. They refuse to see reality due to flawed ideology, so...Why are we not surprised?...(S9)

Soldiers with access to weapons are being used by crime syndicates to help steal them, a security expert says. In the past three years, 50 firearms – including a machine gun, a grenade launcher and 38 automatic assault rifles – have been lost or stolen from the Defence Force, Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has confirmed... MP Pieter Groenewald, who said the loss of R5 assault rifles was particularly worrying as these were used in cash-in-transit heists. In April and May this year alone, nine automatic assault rifles were stolen or lost, including three R4s and six R5s.

“It is precisely this type of weapon which is used in [cash-in-transit] heists but is now also being used in robberies at shopping malls and even in farm attacks,” he said... “That means that there is poor management and poor discipline in the control of firearms in the SA National Defence Force. The only thing that is new is that the weapons have been barcoded with dot-peen machines to show that the firearms belong to the defence force,” he said...Seven firearms, including three 9mm pistols, three R4s and one R5 were lost or stolen from the defence force in 2009/10, while 2010/11 saw a spike in lost or stolen firearms, totalling 20 in that year...

I'm disappointed that Marketplace chose to air the gun-ban lobby's dishonest portrayal of U.S. gun stores as sellers of machine guns to Mexican drug gangs. With the sound of machine guns providing the background context, your story implied that the so-called "assault weapons" routinely sold to American hunters, target shooters and collectors are machine guns and that they are being shipped en mass to Mexico. A little fact checking would have shown that the sale of machine guns to private citizens has been illegal in the U.S. since the 1930's, except under extremely strict federal licensing restrictions, and that real machine guns are prohibitively expensive-- tens of thousands of dollars-- for individuals. The semi-automatic guns sold in gun stores may look like real AK-47's or M-16's but their mechanical function is identical to that of sporting guns used by Americans for over 100 years. The notorious "Fast and Furious" scandal uncovered a plot by the U.S. Justice Department to implicate U.S. gun stores in the Mexican drug murders by coercing U.S. stores to allow the illegal sale of semi-automatic guns to Mexican smugglers. Speculation has focused on fears of a coming regulatory crackdown on gun ownership. Liberal administrations tend to be anti-gun and so, the thinking goes, an Obama re-election would set the stage for stricter gun purchasing requirements. Hence, people are buying now in anticipation of difficulty later.

Indeed, looking at background checks for gun sales (a metric commonly used to gauge general industry performance) 2009 showed a measureable increase that many attributed to Obama’s election.

Is it the same this year? Some anecdotal evidence tends to bear that out.

Dianne Feinstein announced Wednesday that she’s re-entering the battle over gun control during her keynote speech to the California delegates to the Democratic National Convention...

She promised California delegates she’d return to Congress to reintroduce “an updated assault weapons bill.” At the delegates' breakfast, she said that, "Weapons of war do not belong on our streets, in our classrooms, in our schools or in our movie theatres."
