M-4 & M249's Fail in Full-Auto Combat, Troops Claim

In 2008 Afghanistan Firefight, U.S. M4 Rifles Failed
a small but vocal number of troops in Afghanistan and Iraq has complained that the standard-issue M4 rifles need too much maintenance and jam at the worst possible times..Complaints about the weapons the troops carry, especially the M4, aren't new. Army officials say that when properly cleaned and maintained, the M4 is a quality weapon..U.S. special operations forces, with their own acquisition budget and the latitude to buy gear the other military branches can't, already are replacing their M4s with a new rifle...Battlefield surveys show that nearly 90 percent of soldiers are satisfied with their M4s...soldiers said their weapons were meticulously cared for and routinely inspected by commanders. But still the weapons had breakdowns, especially when the rifles were on full automatic...

Paratroopers of the 173rd in Nam' reported instances of M-60 GPMG's literally flying apart during sustained firing. Troops routinely carried parts for 3 M-60's to keep one M-60 operational in the bush to counter this tendency. "Black Horse" Armored Cav gunners reported using motor oil to drench white hot machine-gun barrels during firefights. So don't be too quick to point at the AR/M16 platform as the problem, and note that this would NOT apply to semi-automatic versions, which do not fire at the same high rate (despite the lies and propaganda of the anti-gun forces of evil)...S9
