Experts estimate that one in five law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty is killed by an assault weapon. Crime experts say semi-automatic assault weapons are the "weapon of choice" for drug traffickers, gangs and paramilitary extremist groups in the U.S. and abroad. The Federal Assault Weapons Ban was signed into law by President Clinton in 1994. It expired in 2004.
